MGA vs. MGU: what is the difference?

How managing general agents and managing general underwriters overlap—and why terminology varies.

By MGA Index Newsroom Updated as market practice evolves
DEFINITION

MGA and MGU are often used interchangeably. In practice, MGU usually emphasizes underwriting authority, while MGA can describe a broader set of delegated functions.

Terminology follows the market

Usage differs across companies, jurisdictions and product lines. The contract, regulatory status and actual authorities matter more than the label.

Compare functions, not initials

Determine who controls appetite, pricing, referrals, binding, policy administration and claims decisions. Those functions reveal the operating model.

Why the distinction matters

Boards, capacity providers and distributors need precision about accountability. Ambiguous labels can obscure where decisions and controls actually reside.

WHY IT MATTERS

Use the structure to ask better questions.

The label is only a starting point. Authority, economics, risk ownership, data rights and governance determine how an arrangement works in practice. Decision-makers should test the underlying evidence and contract rather than infer quality from terminology alone.
