Parent reports deliberate reduction in fronting exposure
James River attributed the contraction in Specialty Admitted premium to reduced fronting exposure as it prioritized E&S opportunities.

The specialty admitted insurance platform of James River Group, operating through Falls Lake National Insurance Company, Stonewood Insurance Company and Falls Lake Fire and Casualty Company. Falls Lake combines direct workers-compensation underwriting with specialty programs and fronting relationships.
Falls Lake's program proposition should be read alongside its parent's current capital-allocation strategy. In its August 10, 2026 results release, James River said it was deliberately reducing fronting exposure in favor of opportunities in excess and surplus lines. Company-reported Specialty Admitted gross written premium fell to $18.7 million in the second quarter of 2026 from $77.6 million a year earlier, a decline of about 76%. This is a segment measure, not a report of the performance of every Falls Lake program.
The direction matters more to a prospective administrator than a broad list of historical capabilities. MGA Index's assessment is that a program manager should establish whether the carrier is accepting the specific opportunity, supporting only selected renewals or changing its commitment to that class. The disclosure does not by itself establish that every relationship is ending, nor does it imply a failure to meet existing policy obligations. It does make direct confirmation of appetite and renewal intentions particularly important.
Falls Lake's company page identifies three insurers: Falls Lake National, Stonewood and Falls Lake Fire and Casualty. It describes both direct agency distribution and specialist program partnerships. That structure requires entity-level diligence. A program manager should identify the issuing company, applicable licenses and contractual counterparty rather than rely solely on the Falls Lake brand or a group-level description.
The services page, reviewed on October 5, 2026, continues to describe pure fronting and selected participatory arrangements with risk assumption of up to 20%. Its principal focus is established programs with at least $10 million in annual premium, while some start-ups may be considered. Those published parameters are neither a guaranteed retention level nor confirmation of present capacity. The same materials describe monthly underwriting and claims monitoring, reconciliation of data to cash, and underwriting, claims and financial audits.
The practical test is what those controls require when a portfolio changes. An administrator should be able to reconcile premiums, identify missing claims information and escalate an exception before the next formal audit. Where reinsurance supports the structure, the parties also need an agreed response to changes in terms, collateral or counterparty participation. These are diligence questions derived from the operating model, not findings that Falls Lake's controls have failed.
For an existing partner, continuity planning is therefore more useful than treating the carrier as simply available or unavailable. The relevant evidence is written confirmation of authority, renewal treatment, claims servicing and information-transfer responsibilities for that program. For a prospective partner, the first question is strategic fit under the parent's reduced fronting exposure, followed by economics and implementation. A service description establishes capabilities; it does not establish a current commitment to deploy them.

The current partner directory spans business owners, artisan contractors, auto dealers, timber, property, casualty, aviation, public auto, trucking, rental, cannabis and contractor-liability programs.
Falls Lake lists monthly underwriting and claims monitoring, data-to-cash reconciliation, in-house TPA capabilities, actuarial analytics and underwriting, claims and financial audits among its program services.
The carrier says selected participatory arrangements may include up to 20% risk assumption, while pure-front structures coordinate reinsurance for a fronting fee.
The Florida Surplus Lines Office’s second-quarter 2025 insurer report listed an A- AM Best rating and approximately $116.7 million of capital and surplus for the entity.
